Nigerian feminist, Etomi, shares her opinion on shaming single mothers
“There is so much attack and shaming of single mothers; women who, at whatever age show up and are present in the lives of their children every single day. A well adjusted happy woman, will not raise a broken child. Children are often broken by absent, flaky and uncaring parents who in many cases happen to be the fathers.
Furthermore, children who grow up in 2 parent households, can also experience being from a broken home, abusive parents, philandering dad, miserable mom, witnessing a lack of loving relationship, absent uninvolved parents etc, ‘broken’ doesn’t just mean broken-up. Placing the blame on single moms for growing up in “broken” homes is just another way of patriarchy shames women who have stepped up and are doing right by their children.
